Iwate prefecture is located in northern Japan. It is the second-largest prefecture, next to Hokkaido. This map shows 14 cities, towns, and villages that appear in the text. Morioka City is the geographic, political, and cultural center. Most of the land of the northern district was inadequate for rice cultivation because of the high altitude and cool weather in summer, which is mainly because of Yamase, a foggy sea wind. The southern districts are rather geographically plain, and rice has been a staple, except for in the mountainous area
